Menopause Transition In The Workplace

Women make up half the workforce in Canada. Five million of these women are over the age of 40, and two million are aged 45-55, which is the age range of the Menopause Transition. This number could potentially grow by one-third by 2040. There is a need to help women in the workplace deal with the upcoming changes they will experience and help women who are currently experiencing changes that are affecting their productivity.

If women are supported in the right way and given the tools to improve their experience, it has been proven to help women become an integral part of a company’s success.

Post-menopausal women who manage their symptoms effectively and feel supported often exhibit enhanced creativity, a renewed sense of purpose, improved problem-solving abilities, and strong leadership skills.

Economic Impact:

  • $237M lost annually on loss of productivity.

  • Costs female employees $3.3B in lost income due to a loss in hours worked or having to leave altogether.

  • Approximately 540,000 lost days of work can be due to menopause symptom management.

Facts That Are Getting Ignored

  • 87% of working women feel there is a lack of support in the workplace and feel more is needed.

  • 1/3 or 32% of working women say their symptoms negatively impact their performance.

  • 1/4 or 24% hide their symptoms.

  • 2/3 or 67% would not feel comfortable speaking to their supervisor or to someone in HR

  • 1/2 or 48% feel too embarrassed to ask for help.

Most women feel blindsided by Menopause, especially those with careers and family. They have spent decades focusing on others and that includes their employers. This lack of self-care and self-awareness has led them to feel frustrated, confused and alone.

The biggest impact for women in the Menopause Transition can come from their employers showing support with educational tools that include but are not limited to health coaching, mental health, exercise and nutrition.

Having a Workshop Series or Lunch & Learns can be a great start to supporting your female employees who are going to inevitably go through Menopause Transition. They can both be personalized to fit the needs of what your employees need and are experiencing.
